Almost as difficult to choose this as to choose a favourite. There are plenty of dreadful songs out there, but not many that I hear enough to make me hate it. The Rembrandts “I’ll be there for you” would be a poor song in any circumstances, but hearing it every time Friends was on (at least until I reached for the mute button at the start of each episode) made it loathsome. Deep Blue Something’s execrable Breakfast At Tiffany was made worse by being omnipresent on the radio at a time when I was listening to a lot of radio. Joan Osborne’s One Of Us is probably the worst song I have in my record collection, thanks to Keri pressing the wrong button (or so she says). DJ Otzi’s Hey Baby is just a shit on the face of humanity. But my choice is R Kelly’s I Believe I Can Fly. A ‘soul’ song with no soul. An ‘R&B’ song with no rhythm and no blues. An ‘easy listening’ song that is more difficult to listen to than Metal Machine Music. Saccharine, syrupy and shit. And no, I’m not going to link to it here.
